Overview: A kitchen remodel using 3D studies and construction docs

Tell us about this project and your process.: I began this kitchen design for the Nordquist Family with hand-drawn sketches. I soon realized the client's desire to see many creative options warranted quick 3D studies and animations using SketchUp. This remodel expanded the kitchen across two former rooms to create an integrated kitchen and office/panty area with two islands, bringing family and friends together for culinary entertaining, exhibition cooking, and daily living.

The Nordquist kitchen remodel began with a kitchen on the right, and a separate home office on the left (see floor plan). The home office was isolated and under-used, so the client suggested taking out the wall between the two rooms to create a dramatic culinary kitchen for entertaining. The need for a home office did not go away; it was simply incorporated into the pantry wall at the far left of the floor plan.

The client desired a large island (dubbed the aircraft carrier) where friends and family members could partake in prepping, staging, and eating meals. A 48-inch wide high-performance range is centered on the island for exhibition cooking and provides the cook a view to the family room. The wide open design provides a much needed hub of activity for clients who loves to entertain.
Is there an aspect of this project that is particularly unique or special?: This project showcases a dramatic departure from traditional kitchen design. The second island (on the left) incorporates a large refrigerator/freezer, enclosed on three sides by wood paneling on three sides to match the cabinetry. The appliance would have taken up too much wall space and the client liked the idea of making it a feature of the room, as well as providing a backdrop for their art collection (see photos).
